Blog advice for young and old

My stepson recently started his own blog, and has been asking me my advice.  Rather than share my thoughts with him alone I decided that I'm overdue for metablogging anyway.

To get him started, I recommended he set up a free blog at Blogger.  All else being equal, if you don't want to focus on the details of blog SEO right off, why not get one with the service owned by the largest search engine?  (Even if he decides he wants get his blog found by Google more quickly, I tend to think Blogger still offers a leg up.)

I'm also a big fan of NetworkedBlogs, because it offers a very easy way to find readers through Facebook. I've seen over the years that a good chunk of internet users prefer to get all of their information from a small number of sites.  I used to used Livejournal to read Dilbert and the rest of the funnies, for example.  Facebook is one of the most-used sites for information aggregation right now, and it only takes a few minutes to set up a blog on this handy application.
